Solar in Jefferson County

Most of Lakewood, Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Golden, Edgewater and the county’s other eastern cities are on Xcel Energy, with its 5–9 pm weekday on-peak window. Much of the mountain area is CORE territory (the Evergreen community itself maps to Xcel — check your bill); CORE ended its wholesale power purchases from Xcel at the end of 2025. United Power’s mountain district covers Coal Creek Canyon and Golden Gate Canyon.

Each has different net-metering terms. CORE, for example, net-meters home systems only up to 10 kW AC and credits exports from larger systems at its avoided cost of about 4.6 cents per kWh as of May 2026. Territory lines in the foothills are irregular, so we confirm from your bill.

In unincorporated Jefferson County — Evergreen, Conifer, Indian Hills, Ken Caryl and the rest — residential rooftop solar needs only an electrical permit from Building Safety, with no plan review, although plans must be on site for the inspection to pass. If the array would exceed the roof’s capacity, engineered attachment details are required.

Cities are different. Wheat Ridge is one of five Colorado jurisdictions using SolarAPP+ for full automated permit review. Lakewood, Arvada, Golden and the other cities each run their own building departments. Commercial solar in unincorporated areas requires a full submittal with plans and calculations.

In December 2025, Xcel de-energized about 50,000 customers across Boulder, Clear Creek, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld counties because of extreme wildfire danger. On March 14, 2026, it shut off power to roughly 18,000 more, including about 3,400 in Jefferson County. These outages lasted from a day to more than three.

Unlike an unplanned outage, a public-safety shutoff comes with warning — often a day or two. That makes a battery’s value in the foothills easier to plan around: charge full, set the backup reserve, and run essentials until power returns.

Ponderosa and lodgepole pines shade many foothills roofs for part of the day. A shade analysis is non-negotiable here, and sometimes the right answer is a ground mount in a clearing rather than a shaded roof. We install both.

Snow loads climb with elevation — Evergreen sits above 7,000 feet — and racking must be designed accordingly. On the plains edge, the concern shifts to hail; the May 2017 storm that hit the west metro remains the costliest in Colorado history.

The City of Golden’s 2026 Sustainability Rebate Program reached its budget and closed to new energy applications as of our September 2026 research; its page still lists Level 2 EV-charger rebates for multifamily and income-qualified single-family homes, so ask the city whether those are still being accepted. Other Jefferson County cities do not currently offer solar rebates that we could verify.
