The case for storage under value-of-solar
A battery stores midday production that would otherwise export at the value-of-solar rate and releases it in the evening, when you’d otherwise buy retail power. The bigger the gap between those two numbers, the more the battery earns. We use LPC’s current rates to estimate that value rather than assume.
Grandfathered homes: think twice
If your system predates 2025, you still earn retail credits through January 2040, so a battery’s bill value is much smaller for you. It can still make sense for backup. Confirm with LPC whether adding storage affects your grandfathered status before you commit.
Prices
Powerwall 3: about $19,000 for the first 13.5 kWh, about $12,000 for each additional. Enphase IQ Battery: about $17,000 for the first 10 kWh. SigEnergy: $15,500 for 9 kWh plus $3,500 per extra module. Colorado’s credit covers 10% of the equipment, tax and freight cost, not labor.
FAQ
Questions we hear
Does a battery pay off faster in Longmont than in Xcel towns?
For new solar systems, often yes, because LPC credits exports below retail while Xcel still credits them 1:1. For pre-2025 Longmont systems on retail credits, the difference largely disappears.
Will adding a battery affect my pre-2025 solar credits?
LPC’s rule changes treatment for systems that are new or expanded after January 1, 2025. Whether storage alone counts as expansion is something to confirm with LPC in writing before installing.
When does the Colorado battery tax credit end?
It covers tax years 2023–2026 and the statute repeals January 1, 2027. Verify current terms with a tax professional.
