Where the risk is highest
Businesses in foothills and wind-exposed areas faced this directly in Xcel’s December 2025 and March 2026 wildfire shutoffs, which lasted a day or more in places. Rural co-op territory adds weather outages on long lines. A cooler that stays closed buys a few hours; a multi-day shutoff doesn’t.
Sizing around compressors
Refrigeration compressors cycle on and off, and each start draws a surge. We size inverter capacity for simultaneous starts, then size energy for the hours or days you want to cover. Critical loads — coolers, freezers, controls, a point-of-sale system, a few lights — go on a backed-up subpanel.
Backing up only critical loads, rather than the whole building, is usually what makes this affordable.
Battery or generator
A standby generator runs as long as there’s fuel and is often cheaper up front for large loads. A battery switches over instantly without the brief gap many generator transfer switches create, runs silently, and does useful work every day by shaving demand peaks. Some businesses pair a battery with a smaller generator for extended events.
Paying for it
Commercial storage remains eligible for the federal §48E credit through construction starting in 2033, subject to rules on foreign-entity sourcing, and can be depreciated. The daily demand-charge savings are part of the return. We model all three with an explicit “ask your CPA” on the tax pieces.
FAQ
Questions we hear
Can a battery run a walk-in cooler?
Yes, when the inverter is sized for the compressor’s startup surge and the battery for the hours you need. We read the equipment nameplates before designing.
How long can commercial storage keep refrigeration running?
Hours to days depending on the load and battery size, extended by solar recharging. Well-insulated coolers with closed doors stretch runtime considerably.
Does a battery pay for itself if outages are rare?
Only with a second job. Peak-shaving demand charges every month is what usually carries the economics; outage protection is the insurance on top.
Is there a tax credit for commercial battery backup?
As of September 2026, storage remains eligible for the federal §48E credit for projects beginning construction through 2033, with foreign-entity sourcing rules for newer projects. Confirm with your tax advisor.
